Community foundation awards scholarships

ELLSWORTH, Kan.— The Smoky Hills Charitable Foundation has awarded over $16,000 in scholarships to area students for the upcoming academic year.

  • The Caryle Jean Bender Memorial Scholarship is for graduating high school seniors and graduates of Ellsworth High School. Jordyn Coonrod, Ellsworth, Hayden Rogers, Ellsworth, and Hannah Wilson, Ellsworth all received an $833 scholarship
  • The Charles and Velma Westerman Scholarship is for graduating high school seniors and graduates of Ellsworth High School. Jordyn Coonrod, Ellsworth, received a $1,100 scholarship, Michah Bolton, Ellsworth, received an $850 scholarship, Alexa Hutchins-Talbott, Ellsworth and, Kara Rodriguez, Ellsworth both received a $570 scholarship, and Janae Schulte, Ellsworth, received a $301 scholarship.
  • The Dawn L. Pruitt Memorial Scholarship is for graduating high school seniors and graduates of Ellsworth High School. Jordyn Coonrod and Sara Klein, both of Ellsworth, each received a $600 scholarship.
  • The Eleanor Hunter Scholarship is for seniors graduating from Wilson High School. Cody Slechta, Ellsworth, received a $1,000 scholarship and John Criswell, Wilson, received a $867 scholarship.
  • The Fran Malir Memorial Scholarship is for seniors graduating from Wilson High School. John Criswell, Wilson, received a $500 scholarship.
  • The Geraldine L. Anschutz Memorial Scholarship is for seniors graduating from Wilson High School.  John Criswell, Wilson, Westin Hughes, Wilson, and Brandalyn Thyfault, Dorrance,all received a $300 scholarship.
  • The Jack R. Janousek Memorial Scholarship is for graduating high school seniors and graduates of Ellsworth High School. Jordyn Coonrod, Ellsworth, received a $387 scholarshipand Hannah Wilson, Ellsworth, received a $250 scholarship.
  • The Lila Jean (Warta) Young Memorial Scholarship is for graduating Ellsworth High School seniors planning to go into a medical profession. Joydyn Coonrod and Hayden Rogers, both of Ellsworth, received a $750 scholarship.
  • The Mary Hanzlicek Memorial Scholarship is for graduating Wilson High School seniors who are members of Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church and attend CCD and CYO. Mason Prester, Wilson, received a $4,000 scholarship.

The foundation is home to nine scholarship funds, which were established by area donors to support students pursuing higher education. More information about the scholarship program can be found at www.smokyhillscf.org/scholarships.
